Marathons are long distance races on rivers, lakes, estuary or even open sea.
Official races are classed as Hasler Races, and use a set system defined by the Marathon Racing Committee. Clubs gain points from these races, and compete in a table-system in regions. The top few teams in each region go through to race at a final national event of the year, known as the Hasler Final.
In the UK, paddlers are ranked in a division from 1-9, with 9 being for new paddlers, and 1 being for internationals. The distances paddlers compete at depend on their ranking, using the following approx. system:
Paddlers race within their divisions, independant of age, or sex. This is true for all official races, except the National Marathon Championships, where there are age and sex categories.
